ABSTRACT

Contemporary gender relations in the UK cannot be understood without recognising the impact of the European Union, a gendered supra-state. The increasing integration of the European Union is changing the nature of gender relations in the UK, especially in employment. Much current labour market regulation, especially that concerning gender relations, is dependent upon the Treaties and Directives of the European Union. Some of these legal changes have already had significant impacts on gender relations in employment already, as was shown in Chapter 2. The further planned integration of the European Union will have increasing effects on gender relations in Member States, primarily as a result of its regulation of labour markets and other economic matters.
