ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses transnational or cross-border policing. one can see that the very shape of international policing is complex and contradictory. It mainly discusses arrangements at the macro level such as Europol, and at the meso level, such as Interpol. International policing frequently used to rely on ad hoc liaison between national police bodies. Policing in many countries is extremely fragmented with police organisations consisting of anywhere between two or over a thousand police bodies. UNPOL is referred to as the United Nations Police. Police officers have been deployed in UN peacekeeping missions for decades and the scope of the role of UNPOL is expanding. Security Sector Reform refers to a process of reform that takes place in postconflict areas or nations in transition. It is often part of a wider process which goes far beyond police organisations. International policing is difficult to understand in isolation. It is often part of something bigger.
