Socrates (469-399) Socrates did not write anything at all. We know him only through the indirect and sometimes contradictory accounts of Aristophanes, who caricatures him in the Clouds, and Plato and Xenophon, both of whom paint equally admiring pictures, the former making Socrates the mouthpiece for his philosophical inquiries, while the latter describes the sage of every day life.
