ABSTRACT

More than a hundred years have passed since the intensive, archaeological research in Greece had its beginning in the famous sanctuaries of the Athenian Acropolis, Delphi, Delos and Olympia, and the Greek sanctuaries have, ever since, remained a focal point in the study of ancient Greek culture and civilization. There can be no question here of presenting a full bibliography of the enormous amount of publications dedicated to this material. Instead, a representative selection of published works from the last 25 years (since 1965) is intended to provide up-to-date information on the general course and accomplishments of recent research, which are now, to a greater extent than before, concerned with modest, minor sanctuaries as well as with the large and famous ones. References to earlier literature can be found in the cited works, for most sites also in: D.Leekley and R.Noyes, Archaeological Excavations in the Greek Islands (Park Ridge 1975); in their Archaeological Excavations in Southern Greece (Park Ridge 1976), and D.Leekley and N.Efstratiou, Archaeological Excavations in Central and Northern Greece (Park Ridge 1980).
