ABSTRACT
Joshua Fishman, who taught at the Yeshiva University in New York, has long been a leading figure in socio-linguistics. From his interest in the formalization and standardization of languages in the new states of the former European empires, he was led to reflect increasingly on the particular role and significance of language in the process of construction of nationalism, which he illustrates with a wealth of historical examples.
