ABSTRACT

Many mentally ill mothers are competent parents and others can manage adequately if appropriate support is provided. Some may be able to coparent or provide intermittent parenting.1 However, in the case of severe mental illness, some studies have found that as many as 60% of mothers may lose custody of their children.2 Mothers who have lost custody of their children may grieve for several years3 and are often not supported adequately when this occurs.
