The art of early medieval Britain and Ireland has attracted considerable attention. This is not only because of the wealth of ornamental metalwork, illuminated manuscripts and stone sculpture which has come down to us but also because Insular art has been described as the only art form indigenous to Britain and Ireland which is of world significance.1 Indeed, the art of the early medieval period in these islands has continued to engage the interest of artists and craftsmen to the present day.
