ABSTRACT

Note taking at lectures is a skill which many dyslexic students find difficult when they first come to college. Like reading, however, it is one which can be improved with practice (see note 9.1).

In this connection, S.H.Burton has distinguished two extremes-‘the eager first-year student who tries to take everything down and the exasperated second-year student who has given up the unequal struggle and doesn’t take notes at all’ (see note 9.2). We agree that both these extremes are undesirable. No student-least of all a dyslexic student-will be able to write down all the points made in a lecture, but we suggest that you try to sift out the important ones, making sure that they are not forgotten. First of all it is worth considering how you can prepare yourself in advance.
