ABSTRACT

It is now time to take stock. Before we start to consider the implications for practice and policy, let us briefly summarize the main themes with which the book has been concerned. As the title suggests, the book’s main concern has been to examine the ways in which people from different cultures conceive of death, handle the disposal of their dead, mourn for the dead, and, over time, overcome the sad loss which the death of a loved one brings. We have also examined the range of social (and professional) networks which swing into action to enable the bereaved to overcome their sorrow and come to terms with their loss.
