ABSTRACT

What is a model of counselling? Relatively little has been written on its necessary elements. Although so many approaches to counselling have been spawned by the numerous theories of personality, several theorists have argued that a model of counselling (or psychotherapy) is not the same as a theory of personality (for example, Mahrer 1989:30). Nevertheless, there is no consensus on what actually constitutes an adequate model. There has been an apparent reluctance to put as much energy into theory construction as has been devoted to empirical fact finding (McLeod 1994), but it is possible to discern a growing interest in theory construction, especially within the integrative lobby (Beitman 1994). This chapter seeks to promote this tentative new direction.
