ABSTRACT

Gabeira came to fame as part of the group who kidnapped the American ambassador in 1969, during the most repressive period of the military regime in Brazil. Captured and tortured, he was released the next year in exchange for the West German ambassador. In exile until the 1979 amnesty, he has become famous as a writer of memoirs. His first book, 0 que e isso, companheiro? (What’s Up, Comrade?) (1979), recounting his experiences in the 1960s, was very successful and was controversial again in 1997 when Bruno Barreto adapted it to the screen as Four Days in September. He is one of the leaders of the Green Party, and supports the legalization of cannabis and gay marriage.
