ABSTRACT

Subcomandante Marcos Subcomandante Marcos is the nom de guerre of Sebastian Vicente Guillen, spokesperson for the EZLN (Z ap a tis ta National Liberation Army), a Mayan guerrilla movement that emerged from the rainforest of Chiapas in southern Mexico on 1 January 1994, and has been negotiating with the Mexican government over issues of democratiza­ tion, access to land and indigenous rights, on both the state and national levels. A former professor of communication at the Autonomous University of Mexico (UAM) in Mexico City, Guillen joined the fledgling movement in the rainforest in the mid1980s and has influenced intellectuals throughout Mexico and around the world with his eloquent, humorous, poetic and prolific communiques, often released on the Internet.
