ABSTRACT
Different mechanisms of regional innovation have been acknowledged in the literature, for example Jensen et al. (2007) identify two ideal-types in the Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) and the Doing, Using and Interacting (DUI). This is confirmed in the European Regional Innovation Scoreboard exercise (Hollanders, Tarantola and Loschky, 2009), where it arises a considerable degree of diversity in regional innovation performances, also within countries.
