ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overall view of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The books concretizes and contextualizes the necessity for gender perspectives in analyzing the crisis in a variety of ways. A Gendered Analysis, Yan Liang and Sara Hsu turn people attention to trade and employment impacts in China, another emerging economy whose role in terms of size and economic evolution has been expanding globally. The Transition survey contains observations on 32,084 households and includes a range of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, pertinent to this analysis, it contains an economic crisis module. Two essays provide syntheses of emerging regional employment trends, comparing them along the way with past experiences that include crisis mitigation interventions. Other chapters present research insights based on primary and secondary data that deepen our understanding of how the male and female content of employment in the various sectors of an economy influences gender-differentiated labor market outcomes in times of crisis.
