ABSTRACT
The Republic of Croatia is a small country, covering 56,538 km2 in 1991. It had a population of 4.7 million in that year of which 51 per cent was urban – concentrated in the capital Zagreb (with almost 1 million inhabitants) and the three regional centres of Osijek, Rijeka and Split.
