ABSTRACT

A Solvent adhesives "No one should use a solvent-based adhesive and nobody should make one. They contain only one-quarter to one-third of useful adhesive; they are inflammable, toxic, foul-smelling and expensive since you are going to throw over half the bulk away by evaporation. Solvent-adhesives are legislated against, one by one solvents are banned [ .... ]" (K. W. Harrison, Adhesion, Vol. 3, Applied Science Publishers, 1979)

In spite of these very appropriate thoughts, solvent adhesives solvent adhesives are widely used in conservation and therefore warrant serious consideration in this text.
