The following list sets out for convenience the most frequently used ancient sources. It does not refer to works mentioned in passing once or twice, which are given in standard form in the notes. All discussions of classical and patristic authors are based on standard editions; translations also are quoted from standard series, unless otherwise specified in the notes.
