ABSTRACT

Voluntary organisations have, arguably, never had to operate in an environment as complex and volatile as that of today. The sector is having to adapt to the development of a mixed economy of social welfare provision, changing legislation and regulation, a massive restructuring of funding due to the impact of the National Lottery, and public pressure to become more businesslike. The organisations that survive will be those that learn to become masters, rather than victims, of change. Survivors will be those that respond competitively to change, such as the shift in funding from grants to contracts. They will view change as an opportunity, rather than an obstacle. Organisations that resist change, rather than welcome it, are likely to fail.
