The sword mightier than the pen?

Criticism of recent years has produced several theoretically based readings of the giant sword-hilt recovered by Beowulf from Grendel’s mere. These analyses have encapsulated several broad issues of theory and scholarship in Anglo-Saxon studies which have begun to take centre stage. A consideration of these readings leads to an assessment of where that discussion is today, and where it might go in the future.
