ABSTRACT
The English Midlands can be viewed as that part of the centre of England which remains when other, perhaps more distinct, regions have been assigned. Uniquely among the regions of this volume, its boundaries are not even partly aligned with obvious and striking physical discontinuities such as a major watershed or a coastline. However, this fact should not detract from the importance of a region which has a clear recognition in the public consciousness.
