ABSTRACT

This area of provision, the ‘third pillar’ of guidance (Watts, 1993), is made up of a multitude of helping agencies. Some are specialist, publicly-funded services; some offer an equally specialist service funded through other means (including direct fees to the guidance client); some may offer guidance on learning or work as part of some wider support role to particular client groups. A number of these providers are statutory public services; some are in the private sector; many, however, are in the voluntary sector, operating on a not-for-profit basis.
