Within whole class and group discussions, children often respond in very short contributions of less than ten words. When carrying out research in two schools with Year Four and Five children, the authors discovered that, during group talk, 96 per cent of the individual responses were of fewer than ten words. This echoes the findings of Hardman, Smith and Wall (2003) in their review of interactive teaching in the Literacy Hour, where they found 70 per cent of exchanges were three words or less. They also found only 4 per cent of the children studied for the review extended points made by other children.
