ABSTRACT
We have so far examined mainly changes in the quantities and mechanisms of production and productivity. None of these were ends in themselves: the ultimate object was to meet the requirements of consumers. This chapter will examine the changes in the world economy related to the provision of goods and services from the point of view of their consumers, generally summarized as changes in the standard of living.
