ABSTRACT
In reviewing the literature relevant to the theoretical and empirical questions posed in the introduction, this chapter aims to achieve two goals; first, to outline five bodies of work that will be tested against historical evidence in the subsequent case study chapters, and to weigh up the conceptual merits of each; and second, to weave together into a coherent framework the concepts and insights adapted from three of these theories, so as to flesh out the argument presented in Chapter 1 and structure the remainder of the book.
