ABSTRACT
The focus of my collaboration with Chinese colleagues has been the reform of provision for learners excluded from or marginalised within the educational mainstream. Central to these changes is the overhaul of teacher training and I have close links with two teachers universities: Shanghai’s East China Normal University and Nanjing Normal University. The English translations given by my Chinese colleagues of the names of their universities indicate the journey of a western project: the rational classification of social institutions and individuals.
