ABSTRACT

Dating from the 1960s, the kindergarten was rehoused in new buildings in 1990. When I visited there were about 260 children grouped into nine classes. There were twenty-six members of staff, all women except for the handyman. The kindergarten was open from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., six days a week. Parents paid for their children to attend: about 30 yuan a month plus the same again for food. The work units of some parents helped with the fees but the cost meant that most of the children came from better-off families.
