ABSTRACT
The facts and figures that make up the landscape of Britain today pose a pertinent question: has ‘the most comprehensive and the most advanced system of nature conservation in the world’ had the right effect? Has it done anything towards conserving nature or has it merely built itself into an impressive but toothless piece of machinery? Should we look to the figures with pride and satisfaction or do the facts warrant disappointment and concern?
