ABSTRACT

The Movimento Nucleare (The Nuclear Movement) was a group of artists founded in 1951 by Enrico Baj and Sergio Dangelo. The first manifesto expressed opposition to the rules and traditions of academic art and to the then prevailing avantgarde style, geometric abstraction. Instead, the participants favoured gestural and abstract expressionist art (similar concerns to L’lnformale group), and the use of chance and automatism as had been practised by some of the surrealists. Early works were characterized by the technique of spilling paint.
