ABSTRACT
Film actress Silvana Mangano became a star in 1949, thanks to her performance in Giuseppe De Santis’s neorealist masterpiece Riso amaro (Bitter Rice) though, paradoxically, contrary to the film’s original purpose (which was to denounce the corrupting influence of Hollywood glamour), Mangano thereby became a pin-up and a sex symbol.
