ABSTRACT

Catholic and a rather conservative member of the Institute of Economic Affairs, but was then a Labour candidate. I can remember the first political debate in the Union I ever attended. It was at the time of this very acrimonious election, when Labour had been thrown out, and the National Government had come in and Labour was almost wiped out. They were reduced to 50 seats from getting on for 300, and Colin Clark was a Labour candidate in that election. But he did Statistics. He was a pretty poor lecturer, I remember. There were the ‘Mays’ exams at the end of the second year, which would be my first year in Economics, which I didn’t do particularly well in. I put in all my serious work in the last year.
