ABSTRACT

Sustainable development efforts have been accepted and implemented by the international bilateral and multilateral organizations and by the United States federal agencies and departments. Sustainability emerged as an ecological framework to guide government and business organizations to be involved in community development for sustained economic growth. Sustainability was accepted by social scientists and policy-makers to redress the imbalance from pollution, environmental degradation and damages to the ecosystem. The environmental movement in the United States has contributed to the legitimization and institutionalization of environmental resource conservation concerns within the US federal government agencies. The Environmental Protection Agency received regulatory power to enforce conservation and environmental protection and promote sustainable development. The US Department of Commerce is a federal government agency that administers fisheries and manages the Malcolm Baldrige award. There are several international bilateral and multilateral organizations besides USAID who are involved in international development assistance programs.
