At its annual conference in the spring of 1957 the British Psychological Society organized a symposium on ‘The Contribution of Current Theories to an Understanding of Child Development’. I was invited to speak on the contribution that ethology might be expected to make, and others on associative learning theory, on psychoanalysis and on the system builders, Piaget and Freud. All four contributions were published later that year.
