ABSTRACT

These ideas were developed in his posthumous La Crisis del Desarrollo Argentina (Prebisch 1986), particularly the matter of the political character of the debt.

Days later, he was back in the Chilean CEPAL centre, where he continued to work, by then as director of La Revista de la CEPAL. Prebisch had his residence at the foot of the mountain range in Cajón de Maipo, near Santiago, Chile, and it was there that death surprised him in the dawn of 29 April, at the age of 85. The news was spread to the world by CEPAL, whose telex of the same day had as its title: ‘Latin America lost its most prominent economist’.
