ABSTRACT

In Chapter 12 I considered the process of writing what we might call non-fiction with a focus on history. Here I consider specific components that comprise ancient non-fiction. As throughout this book, I am interested primarily in the memory-literacy axis and the way the ancient tools mediated the results. What precisely is the role of memory, natural and artificial, in the creation and recording of conversations, speeches, translations, and quotations? How does memory affect revisions and digressions?
