ABSTRACT
In urban areas, the regulations were designed to promote health and safety. Following the great fire of Boston, laws were passed requiring the use of brick or stone in buildings. ‘No dwelling house could be built otherwise, and the roof had to be of slate or tile upon penalty of a fine equal to double the value of the building.’
