ABSTRACT
The ultimate aim of an excavation is to draw together the very varied strands of evidence into a coherent whole: the sequence of natural and structural events which has taken place on the site from the earliest occupation (or before) up to the present day. To this structural framework is added all the converging cultural, economic, domestic and environmental evidence which can be detected and assessed.
