In the previous chapters I have explored the historical development of the Buddhist theory of self-cognition (svasaMvedana) with an emphasis on its pre-Dignaga development. My central thesis is that this theory originated in a soteriological discussion of omniscience among the Mahasamghikas, an early Buddhist school established right after the first schism of the Buddhist community. The theory then evolved into a topic of epistemological inquiry among the Yogacarins.
