Beginning with story
In earlier chapters we argued that drama in primary schools combines two powerful learning resources – story plus role play. While there may be stories of all kinds without role play, there can be no role play without a story. It is the ‘bringing alive’ of stories through role play, and other drama techniques and conventions, that enables important social learning to take place. In this chapter, we focus on stories as the heart of drama and also of human learning while, in Chapter 5, we turn to a detailed account of strategies for role play and using dramatic conventions.
