ABSTRACT

WHAT CAN WE TEACH? Canwe teach conducting? While some conductors themselves believe it is aGod-given gift, that there is amystique about conducting, wewouldnot expect even the most talented instrumentalist or vocalist to go without teaching or coaching. There is always more to learn, but learning is not the result only of teaching. Learning is something that we do all the time; we learn through experience as well as occasionally through instruction. I believe that conductors need someothermusical experience before they begin to conduct. But I don’t hold with the view that just because you are an organist you are de facto a potentially effective choral conductor or choral trainer. There is an underlying assumption that conducting is something that you just do-to keep the singers singing together. Easy!
