ABSTRACT

Recognisable periurban development was clearly a widespread feature of Gallo-Roman urbanism. It has already been stated in chapter 4 that more than half of the administrative cities of high empire Gaul have yielded evidence for periurban occupation, despite the imperfect nature of the archaeological record. Chapter 5 found that the most urban secondary agglomerations often generated very similar development, although different methods of spatial organisation were preferred in less urbanised settlements. Finally, chapter 6 was able to trace the continuation of periurban development into late antique Gaul, despite the political, social and economic changes which occurred in this period.
