ABSTRACT

This chapter provides four case studies which have been selected to illustrate, in a little more detail, aspects of some of the issues, that is, climate change, nitrogen deposition, community translocation, creative conservation, habitat restoration and species conservation. The first case study is an illustration of some of the responses of grassland plant communities and associated insect herbivores to simulated climate change. The second case study is an illustration of a field experiment at Budworth Common to test the prediction. The third case study is an illustration of the management of existing grassland, habitat creation and grassland translocation at Manchester Airport, which formed part of the mitigation package for the development of a second runway. The fourth case study illustrates the process of creative conservation. The aim of creative conservation is to create simplified habitats where wildlife can develop.
