ABSTRACT

Ghana’s post-colonial experience has been the subject of extensive study (Ahmad 1970; Chazen 1983; Frimpong-Ansah 1991; Killick 1978; Pellow and Chazen 1986; Rimmer 1992). Our purpose here is not to offer another comprehensive account of post-colonial economic history, as the facts of the period are well established and largely undisputed. What is still in question, however, is the interpretation of those facts; specifically, why Ghanaian economic performance has been, on net, so disappointing.
