ABSTRACT
Just as historians have interpreted events in a variety of ways, so too have they interpreted texts in many different ways. The variety of interpretations provides an immediate reason for doubting their objectivity. Once again, however, a study of historical practice reveals that historians have criteria for deciding which interpretations are superior, so that often a rational choice can be made between them.
