ABSTRACT

Maria was the adoptive mother of Shuhana. Shuhana was born in Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone, in 1896. Her parents were among the few educated and devoted Christians of her tribe, and she was the fifth child of a large family of seven females and one male. They were always referred to by the family name —the family Kankan. The Kankan children were all sent to school and attended regular Sunday classes.
