ABSTRACT
Dramatic fiction represents a number of the most prominent programme genres on television. Nearly four out of ten programmes coded on the four terrestrial channels and two non-movie satellite channels comprised one form of drama or another. On the movie channels, of course, most of the output comprised drama in the form of films originally made for the cinema. This chapter extends the results presented in Chapter 8, which reported general levels of violence registered across cinema films and other forms of made-for-television drama. Further results are presented to reveal how violence was distributed across different types of drama programming and across the drama shown on different television channels. In addition to cinema films, six other drama genres were distinguished: non-UK longrunning serials; UK-produced long-running serials; other non-UK series or serials; other UK-produced series or serials; made-for-TV films; and single plays.
