In 1978 Sherry Ortner published an article outlining the bold hypothesis of a link between gender constructs and processes of political hierarchisation. More specifically, she suggested that the intensification of hierarchy and political centralisation were accompanied by a growing concern with women's chastity and control over their sexuality. A concern with the purity and the honour of women was associated with the rise of the state, which brought with it an ideology that represented women as being in danger rather than dangerous, pure rather than polluting and that privileged the ideal of women as mothers.
