ABSTRACT

So far we have discussed a variety of ways in which health, disease, and illness can be explained. Some of these have emphasized the biological determinants of health while others have addressed a range of more social considerations. What all of these explanations lack, however, is a systematic analysis of two things: power and the broader social context in which health, disease, and illness are defined.
