ABSTRACT

The Penguin Dictionary of Psychology describes motivation as an ‘extremely important but definitionally elusive term’ (Reber, 1995). Having attempted a definition of the term myself I can assure you that this is no cop-out. What I finally decided on was the following: ‘A general term for any part of the hypothetical psychological process which involves the experiencing of needs and drives and the behaviour that leads to the goal which satisfies them’ (Statt, 1998).
