ABSTRACT

The exotropias are a group of disorders that involve all aspects of ophthalmology. Four groups exist, infantile exotropia, intermittent exotropia, consecutive exotropia (following surgery for esotropia) and sensory exotropia (poor monocular vision). This topic concentrates on intermittent exotropia, mentioning the latter two groups and other related conditions only briefly. The term secondary exotropia is avoided, as ‘secondary’ could relate to a poorly sighted eye or previous surgery.
