ABSTRACT

Ametropia is common. Myopia alone accounts for up to 10% of the population. The standard treatment for ametropia is spectacles. Spectacles are considered by some to be inconvenient and cumbersome. Intrinsic optical aberrations may be intolerable. Improved techniques and outcomes in refractive surgery have led to greater numbers of patients seeking this alternative to spectacle wear. This is particularly so in patients who are unable to wear contact lenses, or who choose to avoid them.
